This Month Aboard Nimitz
The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11 and Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 11 are underway for a scheduled Western Pacific deployment.
Nimitz and her crew will have the opportunity to sail to the Western Pacific and operate in support in our nation's ongoing efforts to ensure maritime security.
This Month in Naval History
May 3, 1975 - USS Nimitz (CVN 68) is commissioned, officially becoming the first of its class.
May 5, 1961 - Cmdr. Alan Shepard Jr. makes first U.S. manned space flight. Flight of Freedom 7 (Mercury 3) which reached the altitude of 116.5 statute miles at a velocity of 5,134 mph.
May 7, 1942 - Carrier aircraft sink Japanese carrier Shoho during the Battle of Coral Sea.
May 11, 1862 - CSS Virginia blown up by confederates to prevent capture.
